Out with the old and in with the new.
The perfect time has come to get rid of that old car you’ve been salvaging and trade it in for a new one, with a rebate incentive.
The Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 (CARS) has created the Car Allowance Rebate Program now known as Cash for Clunkers, to help consumers trade in their old cars for newer, more fuel efficient cars. Whether you lease or purchase a car, your new car could be significantly cheaper.
Both TW BPG in Grand Rapids and TW Chevy in Hudsonville are participating and excited about the great offer to its customers.
The program is really easy. You trade-in your car and upgrade to a new one with better fuel mileage and receive up to $4,500 in government assistance. Only the cars that qualify for the trade-in and purchase/lease will receive the rebate.
Want to know if your vehicle qualifies? Check out the details.
In order for your car to qualify, it must:
- have been manufactured in the last 25 years
- have a combined city/highway MPG of 18 or less
- be continuously insured and registered to the same person for one full year before the time of trade-in
Since your new car must have better fuel mileage than your old one, each new car available will depend on your trade-in.
New vehicles with an increased and more fuel efficient MPG will qualify.
For instance:
- Passenger automobiles with a minimum fuel economy of 22 MPG and mileage improvement of at least 4 MPG
- Light-duty trucks with a minimum fuel economy of 18 MPG and mileage improvement of at least 2 MPG
- Large light-duty trucks with a minimum fuel economy of 15 MPG and mileage improvement of at least 1 MPG. These trucks also qualify with the trade-in of a work truck
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) will soon have a Web site that lists qualifying cars and participating dealers by July 24, 2009.
The rebate program will run until November 1, 2009 or until funds have been exhausted, whichever comes first.
